Looking for a unique feature plant in your garden? The Hennepin Master Gardener plant sale will feature several sun-loving plants that are anything but ordinary. Below are some of the selections we’ll have available that are sure to be conversation starters!

Hollyhock ‘Spotlight Mars Magic’ (Alcea rosea)

The hollyhocks that populated cottage gardens for decades are biennial, meaning they bloom during their second year. To ensure blooming every year, these lovely plants needed to be continually reseeded. With the recent introduction of true perennial hollyhocks, you can have tall hollyhocks every year, some reaching 5 feet! The Mars Magic variety pictured here has vivid red blooms that are a far cry from the soft pinks, whites, and rosy colors of the past.

Ornamental Onion ‘Bubble Bath’
(Allium)

Alliums have become increasingly popular due their prolific blooming, hardiness, and resistance to pests, both animals and insects. The Bubble Bath allium is aptly named for its foamy, lavender color blooms compared to the standards like Millenium. This plant is a great choice if your garden needs a soft color to contrast to more intensely colored plants.

(Iris siberica)

Imagine the hardiness of a Siberian Iris with the beauty of a rose. That is what ‘Pink Parfait’ brings to the garden; a great vertical accent with blade shaped foliage and a double, 7” pink/lavender blossom that looks almost like a rose.

Catmint “Chartreuse on the Loose’
(Nepeta)

Catmints have long been hardy, mid-summer blooming staples in Zone 4 gardens. This new variety brings an intriguing visual pop with its bright yellow, almost chartreuse foliage. Reliable, carefree and long blooming, this plant is drought and sun tolerant and makes a lovely border or pathway plant.

Skullcap ‘Smoky Hills’
(Scutellaria resinosa)

Originally found in the Smoky Hills of Kansas, this extremely tough plant has vibrant violet-blue flowers and does exceptionally well in hot and dry conditions. Great against a hot sidewalk, in a rock garden or as xeriscaping (a style of landscaping which requires little or no irrigation). Bring some of the Great Plains home to your garden with this selection!
