Have a tough dry shade site that gets winter sun but little to no summer sun? Pick up some of the underutilized, delicate but hardy Hellebores at our 2025 Spring Plant Sale!
Hellebore is actually a name that is generalized for a group of several different plants that consists of approximately 20 species of herbaceous or evergreen perennial flowering plants. Often referred to as Lenten rose, Christmas rose, or Winter rose, these plants are not related to the rose family and are instead in the Helleborus genus of the Ranunculaceae family which includes plants such as anemone, monkshood, and delphinium.

Plants in the Helleborus genus are generally considered toxic so make sure you don’t have them in areas where curious pets or children that like to get into plants have access. These early blooming beauties have thicker foliage that forms in a low-lying clump and are a stunning garden addition that welcomes the arrival of spring in Minnesota!

Planting them in mass can really elevate the shady areas of your garden. They do very well where many other plants do not such as planting near large deciduous trees or in other areas where they can get winter sun and summer shade. These low maintenance plants make an excellent choice for the gardener that likes to “set it and forget it,” but still wants a gorgeous spring pop in the garden.
