Small Space? Try Container Gardening with Herbs!

Short on space, but want to grow herbs? Yes, you can!

All you need is a pot and some sun. We’ll have more than 40 varieties of herbs and over 2200 plants to choose from, including a dozen varieties of basil.

Helpful Hints:

Sun: 6 hours or more of sun, but always follow the plant instructions on the tag.

Pot: Most herbs are small plants with shallow root systems. The planter, pot, or container for your herbs should be 12” or more in diameter. This width will allow you to grow several types of herbs in one planter. The photos show some lovely combinations.

Drainage: Containers used for growing herbs, whether indoors or outdoors, should always have holes in the bottom for proper drainage. Most container plants prefer moist, not soggy, soil. Always use good quality potting soil in your container – don’t use soil from your garden.

Water: Water thoroughly once a week by soaking the soil to the depth of the root zone. Outdoor containers may need to be watered more often on hot and sunny days, but avoid soggy soil conditions. Never allow the plants to wilt between watering, as it is hard on the plant and root system.

Fertilize sparingly. For outdoor containers, use liquid fertilizer at half the label – recommended strength once every 3 to 4 weeks.
