Vegetables that are out of this world for their flowers, flavors, and nutrients!

At first glance, you might think this is some kind of new hibiscus… but you would be wrong! It is an OKRA flower, soon to become an okra pod. What is okra? It’s more than a veggie that’s used in gumbo. Try stir fry or deep frying or, even better, pickle it for a snack or a garnish in your Bloody Mary! Just be sure to harvest okra when the pods are young and tender. You should be able to cut the pod off the stem with your thumbnail. Harvest every day because they grow quickly… or just grow them for their beautiful (and edible) flowers.

Are GROUND CHERRIES related to cherries? Not at all. You might guess that they are small tomatillos because of the husk, and you would be closer, but the flavor is totally different and out of this world! The more gold they are, the sweeter. If any make it into the kitchen, you’re disciplined. Most of the time, you will pop them into your mouth straight form the garden and savor the deliciousness!

This mini watermelon looking veggie is really a member of the cucumber family. CUCAMELONS taste like cucumbers with a hint of lime and is considered a superfood because it is packed with antioxidants, vitamins & fiber. Just pop them in your mouth for a delicious snack or use them in salads. Why are they also called MEXICAN SOUR GHERKINS? Perhaps because they are native to Mexico and parts of Central America.
