Problems with deer? Deer will eat just about anything when they are in need of food and no other options are around. While there is no such thing as a deer-proof garden, you can do some things to make your garden less desirable.
When there are preferred options available, they are more likely to avoid plants with a bitter taste or strong fragrance, foliage that is tough, fuzzy or prickly, and plants with thorny stems (with the exception of roses which tend to be a high value option for them as they can easily avoid the thorns to get to the flowers and new growth).
Many herbs are deer resistant due to their strong scents, oils and textures. Excellent choices include lavender, rosemary, sage, thyme and mint. Another plus in the herb column is that they can easily be grown in containers making them a great option for small, sunny spaces.
The Hennepin County Master Gardener Spring plant sale will have many herb options to help you on your way to planning a more deer-resistant garden!
