Awards

Awards are presented to U of MN Extension Master Gardener Volunteers in Hennepin County at our Annual Awards and Recognition Banquet, usually held in January.  Volunteers are encouraged to nominate their peers for outstanding work.  For a listing of previous winners, click here.

ARCHIE CAPLE AWARD

PURPOSE:  The Archie Caple Award began in 1989 as a way to recognize Master Gardener volunteers who have selflessly given of their time and effort to promote the cause of successful gardening and contributed significantly to the overall success of the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Program in Hennepin County.

CRITERIA FOR ARCHIE CAPLE AWARD

The nominee has made a significant contribution to the program through:

  • consistent involvement for a minimum of five years;
  • demonstrated leadership at various levels in the program;
  • exemplifying a high level of excellence for master gardeners when representing the program;
  • promoting a sense of teamwork and camaraderie when working with others;
  • engagement in a variety of activities;
  • a stated intention to maintain long-term active engagement and;
  • consistent service beyond the minimum requirements for active participation.

COMMUNITY GARDENER AWARD

PURPOSE:  To honor Master Gardener volunteers who give generously of their time and talent to educate and support community gardeners throughout the county.

CRITERIA FOR COMMUNITY GARDEN AWARD

The nominee has made a significant contribution to the program through:

  • sharing gardening knowledge as a means to promote healthy living;
  • mentoring community members who desire to learn about vegetable gardening;
  • promoting education about food access and nutrition; and
  • advocating for increasing the number of community gardens.

GOLDEN APPLE AWARD

PURPOSE:  To honor Master Gardener volunteers who go above and beyond program requirements to educate youth about horticulture.

CRITERIA FOR GOLDEN APPLE AWARD

The nominee has made a significant contribution to the program through:

  • giving presentations to youth in schools and community venues;
  • advocating and promoting education to youth about plants, insects and/or gardening skills;
  • creating and/or enhancing presentations for youth; and
  • exhibiting high motivation to work with young people.

GREEN LEAF AWARD

PURPOSE:  The Green Leaf Award recognizes Master Gardener volunteers who have greatly contributed to a successful project supporting and endorsing environmental stewardship within Hennepin County.  Examples include, but are not limited to, urban tree inventories, watershed district initiatives, shoreline restorations, public area improvement projects, etc.

CRITERIA FOR GREEN LEAF AWARD

The nominee has made a significant contribution to the program through:

  • participating in a project that supports and promotes environmental stewardship within Hennepin County;
  • engaging the local community in the project (example:  recruiting volunteers to complete the project);
  • leading activities to complete the project; and
  • actively participating throughout the volunteer effort.

OUTSTANDING MENTOR AWARD

Purpose:  to honor the Master Gardener recognized for giving generously of his/her time and talent to provide a positive and meaningful experience for an Intern during the past year.

Criteria for Mentor Award:

The nominee has made a significant contribution to the program through:

  • acting as a role model for Interns, especially those assigned to him/her
  • participating in volunteer opportunities with assigned interns
  • serving as a coach to assigned interns, advising them on successfully meeting their first year requirements
  • presenting interns to other Master Gardener’s to help them develop a strong network within the program
  • acting as an advocate for interns to the HCMG program

Candidates for this award can be nominated by the own Intern or any Master Gardener who witnesses these characteristics in someone serving as a Mentor.  To nominate for the Outstanding Mentor Award, click here.

OUTSTANDING TEAMWORK AWARD 

PURPOSE:  The Outstanding Teamwork Award recognizes a group of Master Gardener volunteers who have worked as a team to effectively complete a project or support the work of the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Program in Hennepin County.

CRITERIA FOR TEAMWORK AWARD

The team has made a significant contribution to the program through:

  • effectively working to complete a project or offer support to the University of Minnesota Master Gardener Program in Hennepin County;
  • creating a fun and positive atmosphere when working together;
  • inspiring others to “do good” by their actions;
  • respecting team members by being punctual and present at team meetings and activities; and
  • being actively engaged throughout the team effort.

UNSUNG GARDENER AWARD

PURPOSE:  The Unsung Gardener Award recognizes a Master Gardener volunteer who has made a great effort working quietly behind the scenes to support and promote the work of the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Program in Hennepin County.

CRITERIA FOR UNSUNG AWARD

The nominee has made a significant contribution to the program through:

  • consistent reliability while following through with task commitment;
  • active involvement in at least one key Master Gardener program activity;
  • willingness to take on any task, whether menial or intensive;
  • actively supporting and promoting the betterment of the Master Gardener Program as a whole;
  • sharing ideas and offering time and energy to support program activities; and
  • actively participating in program activities above and beyond program requirements.
